Arrival at the eastern fringes of Hemel Hempstead from Junction 8 of the M1 was an underwhelming experience with a landscape dominated by highway related elements and poorly managed road side verges blighted by off-road lorry parking and fly-tipping. Luke Greysmith (for LUC) designed a series of undulating landforms with robust planting to withstand the harsh environment. This included new roundabout planting around the existing ‘phoenix’ sculptures and five new oak trees adjacent to the road, reflecting the district coat of arms.
